Warren Zevon Concerts: The List

Jen’s Warren Zevon Collection as of 12/18/2012

To say I am a big Warren Zevon fan is something of an understatement. I’ve had the honor of seeing Warren perform live six times, twice at Tower Theatre, three times at Chestnut Cabaret and once at the Bayou. I got to meet him after a show and he couldn’t have been nicer, even signing my liner notes to Sentimental Hygiene!

Since those halcyon days, I have accumulated over a hundred of Warren’s live concerts on tape and CD – legally, I might add, thanks to the kind efforts of Jordan Zevon at WarrenZevon.com.

The list below signifies as complete a list as I’ve been able to cobble together over the years of Warren Zevon albums, concerts and radio interviews. Many of my internet references have since disappeared, so much of the accuracy will have to be taken on faith that I am as obsessively detail oriented as I appear to be (the skeptical might want to scroll down to see what I mean). So caveat emptor, folks.

I’ve tried to include useful links where appropriate – Wikipedia for basic info, iTunes for albums, and Archive.org for nearly 100 free and legal Warren Zevon concert downloads.  The green listings? Those are concerts I don’t own in any form, but would love to track down some day, if you get my hint.

Questions? Comments? Leave ’em all the way at the bottom or e-mail me at jen@typingmonkeys.com.

I’m a huge Zevon fan starting back in the 1970’s… When I saw this list I thought maybe the author(s) or some readers could help to jog my memory.

I never got to see Zevon in concert because he cancelled the only time he was set to perform in my home state of Oklahoma….

I believe he was slated to appear at the Boomer Theater in Norman around 1980 or so. Anyone remember this cancellation?

I think you’re missing one of his concerts at Alice Cooperstown 4/1/2000 with Jill Sobule. I was there and it was awesome!!

Hi, stumbled upon this site by accident, wondering why it took me so long…

SOMEWHERE I have a tape of the following concert:

1985 10/30 – Columbus OH: Newport Music Hall

Now, I’m not sure where it is exactly, or if it’s playable, but I might be persuaded to search around a bit if I knew there might be a small financial incentive?

Thanks,

SWM

Hi Dig- been obsessed today trying to find any video of the awesome W.Z. concert I attended at !st Ave. in Mpls…tho I don’t recall if it was the 1988 or 1990 one…I do remember Timothy Schmidt played with him…I woke up this morning with the song “I can’t Tell You Why” and memories of that concert…W.Z. in a white shirt and suspenders…any help in archiving would be appreciated.
LOVE Warren Zevon

I am a big Warren Zevon fan, but never got to see him in Canada.

I was attending school in Golden Colorado 1992-94 and Mr Zevon was scheduled to play at the Buffalo Rose Saloon in Golden. I was one Excit(able)ed Boy. I can’t remember exactly when this was but “1994 03/06 – Aspen CO: Wheeler Opera House” seems to be about the right time.

Alas the show was cancelled and I never did get to see him perform. One of the biggest disappointments of my life.

Gah, I copied the wrong date. I meant to reference “1992 02/03 – Boulder CO: Boulder Theater”, as Golden is only about 40 miles down the road from Boulder.

Sometime in the summer of 1985, Warren Zevon played an unscheduled (I think) show (by himself -no accompaniment) at the Fast & Cool bar in Dallas, TX. Some friends who knew I was a fan alerted me. Me and a friend went in hours before the show to buy tickets backstage. My buddy walked up the hallway to the stage entrance where Warren was doing a sound check playing Roland…For the show, I sat at the bar directly side-stage about 25 feet from him, and it was one of the musical highlights of my life. He mentioned that he just wrote Boom Boom Mancini the week before and was playing it for the first time that night.

I was there for 2 shows. 6/17/86 Fast & Cool Club and 3/20/83 when it was still Nick’s Uptown. Our table was touching the stage. We had to cover our drinks when he played the harmonica. Both Shows were excellent.

I thought I remembered seeing Warren Zevon live at San Diego State, probably in the mid to late 1970s. But, that is the problem with getting old – the memory goes. I know I saw him live twice, and I have a tee shirt from the Sentimental Hygiene Tour. I think I saw him in the LA area for that. Does anyone remember if he played at San Diego State? He is one of my two favorite artists, both ‘Zs’, Zevon and Zappa/

One show not listed was at Philadelphia’s Academy Of Music (I think.) . I do not know the date but the group that sang “Geronimo’s Cadillac” was the opening act. This was around the time when “Werewolves of London” was a big hit. It was definitely not the Tower Theatre, the Main Point, the World Café, the Theatre of the Living Arts or the Chestnut Cabaret. It was a larger theatre than any of those other venue’s with very steep seats but it was not an arena like the Spectrum. I do believe he was drunk and he was definitely great.
Much later, he also opened for someone at the arena that the Philadelphia Flyers play at. I don’t remember if it was the Spectrum or it’s replacement or who he opened for. He was sober and quite restrained but it was still a good performance, although he seemed a bit reluctant to do “Werewolves”. However I do remember thinking that he put on a better show when he was drinking.

The Spectrum concert, he opened for Stevie Winwood, Warren also played the Academy of Music in Feb of 1983, the concert had been snowed out and was scheduled for later Feb. Opened the show with Frank and Jesse James on grand piano!

I went to the 1988 show in Wichita, Kansas. I was on Thanksgiving break from college, but I don’t think it was Thanksgiving night (November 24). So my best guesstimate is that it was Tuesday November 22.

Correction. It was the 1990 show in Wichita with Dan Dugmore and Gurf Morlix, which is not listed above. Same relative timeframe, though.

On 5 December 1976 Warren supported Jackson Browne at the Glasgow Apollo. Those who were there say it was very cold and Browne wore a Stewart tartan scarf. David Lindley played reels on his fiddle to warm people up. Warren was “excellent”.
I saw him 24/5/2000 at The Fruitmarket. A solo gig and a musical highlight for me.

This is a great live broadcast if you can track it down:

I saw him three times. The only one that made the list was the show in NY at the Bottom line in 1984. He did a show not long after (1985) at Rutgers in New Brunswick that I attended. I finally saw him at a small venue in 1994 in Gaithersburg, MD ( if I recall it was Brewers Alley at the time). That last was so remarkable as he had aged about 10 years since I last saw him but looked like he was 60 not the 48 or so he would have been. He played solo but had a guy that backed some songs on sax. But what was remarkable was to get a glimpse of his human side. I overheard two of his crew in the men’s room before the show started saying he was upset at the small size (<200) of the venue and was threatening to not come out. He did but the crowd really didn't know his music so of course they were yelling for Werewolves. Which he refused to play but did accede to Roland. He then said he felt strange to have become an oldies guy and hoped that someday Alanis Morissette would have to play the brew pub and people would ask her to play the song where so gives the guy a blow job.

I was at that show in Gaithersburg. It took place at Old Town Tavern. I recall he was not happy that is was a small venue. But, my memories – I enjoyed the show and it was cool to see him.

He played Columbus, Ohio twice in 1992, both times at the Newport Music Hall. January 18th, 1992 was the tour where he had The Odds opening for him. The ticket stub we have for the July 6th, 1992 says “Solo Recital Recording.” We also have a set list from one of these shows but don’t know which one, sadly.

I opened for Warren Zevon in Charlotte.

1993. Either 13-13 club or Pterodactyl club
I didn’t meet Warren but met his band and road manager

Trying to remember a small concert in a State University of New York (SUNY) campus gym in 1979 or 1980. I think it was in SUNY Oneonta but it might have been a different SUNY campus.
